| History
The Taking Education to Work initiative began in 1998 from a collaborative effort of the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce, the North Harris Montgomery Community College District, the Gulf Coast Tech Prep School to Work Partnership, the Gulf Coast Quality Work Force and Aldine, Cy-Fair, Humble, Klein and Spring ISD's. The inaugural shadowing program was kicked off with the support of DeMontrond AutoCountry, Toshiba International, Continental Airlines and Baker Hughes Inteq, who hosted a total of 28 teachers at eight sites for one week.
The increase in teacher participation in Taking Education to Work has been more than remarkable - in 1998, 28 Teachers participated in Job Shadowing, and in 2001 the number of teachers increased to 129.
Since the first year of operation of Taking Education to Work:
-
5,719 students from four area school districts have participated in Summer Job Shadowing;
-
Over 5,500 students have participated in Career Fairs and Expos sponsored by TEW and it's partners.
-
673 teachers and counselors from four area school districts have participated in job shadowing.
(We estimate that a teacher may work with at least 125 students a year.)
Our education partners include Aldine, Cypress-Fairbanks, Klein and Spring independent school districts, North Harris Montgomery Community College District and the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce.
